Due to the train strike today’s Design class was online, which I was actually very happy about, since I had a very bad case of medication induced nausea this morning (it happens from time to time when I am unable to get my needed amount of sleep a few days in a row) that actually even prevented me from going to my morning class. Anyway, a few hours and 3 litres of water later I feel better and we start the session. Being at home also meant I had ALL my art supplies available, which was great for the colour studies.
I am honestly not the best at using shape but I am fairly confident about my use of colour. It might take a few try’s but it’s still very intuitive for me. I will usually do some colour studies with my markers and once I have a few ideas I like I’ll work on it digitally because my willingness to play and switch around colours on an endless supply of copied and pasted line drawings far exceeds my willingness to redraw the same thing over and over again (didn’t have any prints of my drawings).
I do have to say I was a bit disappointed to hear that the design process was basically over and that the designs we made using the extracted shapes were going to be our final designs. I know this is only a small and fast project with a formative assessment but I really would have liked to explore more and different ways to get to a final design. I got a bit attached to my project especially after doing the initial collage work and I had a few ideas of what I would like my designs to look like. The designs I have now are ok I guess. They aren’t bad by no means but I personally don’t find them very exciting nor representative of my style. I think the extracting shape thing was a really good exercise and a good example of ONE possible way to generate a body of work but since 1. Shape is not my priority/ focus when it comes to design and 2. My artists doesn’t have a lot of shape and structure to begin with, I am honestly not really satisfied with the outcome even though I know that objectively speaking they aren’t bad.
I’m thinking about since I designed a few tops that still lack some sort of bottom that I’ll ignore the shapes thing and just do what I feel like for those. We’ll see.
